ਨਿਊਜ਼ੀਲੈਂਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰੀਨ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਨੇ ਨਵੇਂ AI ਡਾਟਾ ਸੈਂਟਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ‘ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਲ ਲਈ ਰੋਕ ਲਗਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਇਸ ਖੇਤਰ ਲਈ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਨਿਯਮ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਬਣਾਏ ਜਾ ਸਕਣ।
ਸਾਊਥਲੈਂਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣ ਰਹੇ ਡਾਟਾ ਗ੍ਰਿਡ ਸੈਂਟਰ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਖਪਤਕਾਰ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ 6 ਲੱਖ ਲੀਟਰ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਜਮੀਨ ਵਿੱਚੋ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਰਤਣ ਦੀ ਮਨਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵੀ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ।
ਗ੍ਰੀਨ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀ ਸਹਿ-ਨੇਤਾ ਕਲੋਈ ਸਵਾਰਬਰਿਕ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਜੈਕਟ ਨਿਊਜ਼ੀਲੈਂਡ ਦੀ ਕੁੱਲ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਦਾ ਕਰੀਬ 6 ਫ਼ੀਸਦੀ ਵਰਤੇਗਾ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਮਹਿੰਗੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਥਾਨਕ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਸਰੋਤਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਦਬਾਅ ਪਵੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਉਦਯੋਗਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨੌਕਰੀਆਂ ਖ਼ਤਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪੂਰੀ ਸਲਾਹ-ਮਸ਼ਵਰਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਜੈਕਟਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ।
ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ, ਡਾਟਾ ਗ੍ਰਿਡ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਵੇਸ਼ਕ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਮਰਕਰੀ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਜੈਕਟ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਲਗਭਗ 1,200 ਨੌਕਰੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ 300 ਤੱਕ ਸਥਾਈ ਨੌਕਰੀਆਂ ਬਣਨਗੀਆਂ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਨਿਊਜ਼ੀਲੈਂਡ ਦੀ ਨਵਿਆਉਣਯੋਗ ਊਰਜਾ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਉਠਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਏਗਾ।
“AI” Data Centres in NZ: Job Creators or Job Killers.
The Green Party is calling for a one-year pause on approving new AI data centres so proper rules and regulations can be introduced.
Data Grid has already received approval to build a major data centre in Southland. Once operational, it will become New Zealand’s second-largest electricity user and will be allowed to use more than 600,000 litres of groundwater each day.
Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick says the project could increase electricity prices, put pressure on local water supplies, and threaten jobs in other industries. She believes the public should have a greater say before projects of this scale are approved.
However, Data Grid and investor Mercury argue the project will create significant economic benefits. They say it will generate around 1,200 construction jobs and up to 300 permanent jobs once completed, while also supporting New Zealand’s renewable energy sector and long-term economic growth.
